On May 19th, Paulina Porizkova will speak at the TEDxAsburyPark conference at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park. In her TEDxAsburyPark Talk, Porizkova will expand upon her New York Times opinion piece, “America Made Me A Feminist.”

Porizkova is a model, actress, and writer originally from Czechoslovakia. She was first discovered by a modeling scout at age fifteen, and her career blossomed from there. Over her

modeling career, Porizkova had many accomplishments, including being featured on a record number of Glamour and Cosmopolitan magazine covers and signing the largest cosmetic contract ever with makeup brand Estee Lauder.  She was also the first model to appear on the covers of both Sports Illustrated and American Vogue.

Porizkova eventually transitioned into an acting career, where she starred in sixteen films and various television shows. Currently, Porizkova lives in New York City with her family and is writing a script for a television series as well as a memoir.

Even though Porizkova ended school when she began her modeling career, she used her love of reading as a way to further her education. “Reading is what truly inspires me. Novels. The longer, the better,” said Porizkova. She has even utilized this knowledge in order to publish her own books, as well as multiple opinion pieces for The New York Times and Huffington Post.

Porizkova lived in her home country of Czechoslovakia as well as France and Sweden before eventually settling down in the United States. “These four countries have shaped me as a person and a woman,” she said.

Porizkova’s talk will focus on the cultural contrasts in each of these countries, such as how women are valued differently and how that affects them.
